The Standing Senate Committee on National Security and Defence met this day in camera, at 8:10 a.m., in the Lombard Room, 89 Chestnut, University of Toronto, the Chair, the Honourable Colin Kenny, presiding.
Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Atkins, Banks, Cordy, Day, Forrestall, Kenny and Meighen (7).
In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch, Library of Parliament: William Price, Analyst; Major General (Ret'd) Keith McDonald, Senior Military Advisor; Captain (N) Kenneth Stewart, DND Liaison Officer; Sergeant Harold O'Connell, RCMP Liaison Officer; Barry Denofsky, National Security Advisor; and Veronica Morris, Communications Officer.
In accordance with rule 92(2)(e), the committee considered its draft agenda.
At 8:38 a.m., the committee suspended its sitting.
At 8:47 a.m., the committee resumed its sitting in public in the Giovanni Room A, 89 Chestnut, University of Toronto.
Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Wednesday, October 20, 2004, the committee continued its examination on the need for a national security policy for Canada. (See Issue No. 1, Monday, October 25, 2004, of the committee's proceedings for the full text of the Order of Reference.)

The Chair made an opening statement.

David Dewitt made a presentation and answered questions.
At 10:53 a.m., the committee suspended its sitting.
At 11:07 a.m., the committee resumed its sitting.
Martin Shadwick made a presentation and answered questions.
At 12:08 p.m., the committee suspended its sitting.
At 12:15 p.m., the committee resumed its sitting with Senator Forrestall assuming the chair.
It was agreed that the Chair be authorized to conduct a fact-finding activity at Pearson airport on December 3, 2004; and
That his findings be reported to the committee.
At 12:30 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
