The Standing Senate Committee on National Finance met at 9:37 a.m., this day, in room 705, Victoria Building, the Chair, the Honourable Donald H. Oliver, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Day, Downe, Ferretti Barth, Harb, Mitchell, Murray, P.C., Oliver and Ringuette (8).

In attendance: Odette Madore, Research Officer, Library of Parliament.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Monday, March 7, 2005, the committee continued its consideration of the examination of the Main Estimates laid before Parliament for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2006. (For complete text of the Order of Reference, please see Issue 14 of the proceedings of the committee.)

WITNESS:

Department of Finance Canada:

Peter Devries, General Director, Deputy Minister's Office.

The Chair made a statement.

The Chair read an extract from a letter from the Privacy Commissioner, Ms. Jennifer Stoddart.

It was agreed that the letter be attached as an appendix to the Minutes of Proceedings.

Mr. Devries made a statement and answered questions.

The Chair made a statement about the committee's future business.

At 11:14 a.m. the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
