OTTAWA, Thursday, May 12, 2005
The Standing Senate Committee on Fisheries and Oceans met this day at 10:52 a.m. to examine and report on issues relating to the federal government's new and evolving policy framework for managing Canada's fisheries and oceans.
Senator Gerald J. Comeau (Chairman) in the chair.

The Chairman: Honourable senators, we are continuing our examination of a report on issues relating to the federal government's new and evolving policy framework for managing Canada's fisheries and oceans.
Our witnesses this morning were to be His Worship Don Stewart, Mayor of the Town of Harbour Breton, Newfoundland and Labrador; David Vardy, Chair of the Harbour Breton Industrial Adjustment Services Committee; and Eric Day, Chair of the Fish, Food and Allied Workers Union of Harbour Breton. Due to foggy conditions, their plane could not take off yesterday and they were unable to make it here this morning.
Rather than cancel this meeting, I suggest that we discuss the proposed summary of evidence that has been prepared and distributed to committee members in an effort to get some additional ideas for the report that we will be drafting. If that is agreeable, we will move in camera to discuss the report.
Hon. Senators: Agreed.
The committee continued in camera.
