The Standing Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs met this day at 5 p.m. in room 160-S of the Centre Block, the Chair, the Honourable Peter A. Stollery, presiding.
Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Corbin, Di Nino, Grafstein, Losier-Cool, Mahovlich, Prud'homme, P.C., Robichaud, P.C. and Stollery (8).
Also present: From the Parliamentary Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Peter Berg, Blayne Haggart and Michael Holden, analysts.
In attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.
Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Wednesday December 8, 2004, the committee continued its study of development and security challenges facing Africa; the response of the international community to enhance that continent's development and political stability; Canadian foreign policy as it relates to Africa; and other related matters. WITNESSES:
Philip Zachernuk, Professor, Department of History, Dalhousie University, and President, Canadian Association of African Studies.
Timothy Stapleton, Associate Professor, Department of History, Trent University.
Frederic Cooper, Professor, Department of History, New York University.
Messrs. Zachernuk, Stapleton and Cooper made presentations and answered questions.
