The Standing Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs met this day at 5:10 p.m. in room 160-S of the Centre Block, the Chairman, the Honourable Peter A. Stollery, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Andreychuk, Corbin, Di Nino, Downe, Eyton, Grafstein, Mahovlich, Prud'homme, P.C., Robichaud, P.C. and Stollery (10).

Other senators present: The Honourable Senators Dyck and Nancy Ruth (2).

Also present: From the Parliamentary Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Peter Berg, Analyst.

In attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to an Order of Reference passed by the Senate on Thursday October 21, 2004, the committee continued to examine such issues as may arise from time to time relating to foreign relations generally. (For the full text of the Order of Reference, see Issue No. 2, Wednesday November 24, 2004.)

Mss. Rahme, Ahmmad, Abd-ul-Hussein, Ibrahim and Salman made presentations and answered questions.

At 6:09 p.m., the committee suspended its proceedings.

At 6:14 p.m., the committee reconvened in camera, in accordance with Senate rule 92(2)(e).

Pursuant to the Order of Reference passed by the Senate on Wednesday December 8, 2004, the committee continued to examine the development and security challenges facing Africa; the response of the international community to enhance that continent's development and political stability; Canadian foreign policy; and other related matters. (For the full text of the Order of Reference, see Issue No. 3, Tuesday, December 14, 2004.)

The committee considered a draft agenda.

It was agreed, — That the Subcommittee on Agenda and Procedure be authorized to make decisions on behalf of the committee in respect of certain matters brought to its attention.

At 6:52 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
