The Standing Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs met this day at 5:30 p.m. in room 160-S of the Centre Block, the Chairman, the Honourable Peter A. Stollery, presiding.
Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Andreychuk, Corbin, De Bané, P.C., Di Nino, Downe, Eyton, Mahovlich, Robichaud, P.C., Stollery and Stratton (10).
Also present: From the Parliamentary Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Peter Berg, Analyst.
In attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.
Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Wednesday, December 8, 2004, the committee continued to examine the development and security challenges facing Africa; the response of the international community to enhance that continent's development and political stability; Canadian foreign policy as it relates to Africa; as well as other related matters. Messrs. Barr, Smilie, Kieran and Ayittey made presentations and answered questions.
At 7:05 p.m., the committee suspended its proceedings.
At 7:07 p.m., the committee reconvened.
The Chairman reported on the recommendations of the Subcommittee on Agenda and Procedure respecting the following questions:
- The fact-finding mission to the United Nations;
- The study of Canada's International Policy Statement;
- The report of the Auditor General of Canada;
- The visit of a delegation from Saudi Arabia;
- The Chairman's participation in the ``Prospects for Concluding the Doha Development Agenda Trade Negotiations'' conference scheduled to take place in Wilton Park from July 18 to July 21, 2005.
Agreed — That the recommendations of the Subcommittee be adopted.
At 7:13 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
