The Standing Senate Committee on Human Rights met this day, at 4:00 p.m., in room 705, Victoria Building, the Honourable A. Raynell Andreychuk, Chair, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Andreychuk, Carstairs, P.C., LeBreton, Losier-Cool, Oliver, Pearson and Poy (7).

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Laura Barnett.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Wednesday, November 3, 2004 the committee began to its consideration of its authorization to invite from time to time the President of the Treasury Board, the President of the Public Service Commission, their officials, as well as other witnesses to appear before the committee for the purpose of examining cases of alleged discrimination in the hiring and promotion practices of the Federal Public Service and to study the extent to which targets to achieve employment equity for minority groups are being met.

WITNESSES:

Public Service Commission:

Maria Barrados, President;

Greg Gauld, Vice-President, Merit Policy and Accountability;

Paula Green, Director General, Equity and Diversity

Ms. Barrados made a statement and together with the other witnesses answered questions.

At 5:25 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.

The Standing Senate Committee on Human Rights met at 4:04 p.m. this day, in room 160-S, Centre Block, the Honourable A. Raynell Andreychuk, Chair, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Andreychuk, Carstairs, P.C., Chaput, LeBreton, Oliver, Pearson and Poy (7).
