The Standing Senate Committee on Legal and Constitutional Affairs met this day, at 6:05 p.m., in room 160-S, Centre Block, the Honourable Senator Lise Bacon, Chair, presiding.
Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Andreychuk, Austin, P.C., Bacon, Chaput, Cools, Joyal, P.C., Milne, Mitchell, Nolin, Pearson, Ringuette, St. Germain, P.C. and Stratton (13).
Other senator present: The Honourable Senator Prud'homme, P.C. (1).
In attendance: From the Library of Parliament Mary C. Hurley, Analyst.
Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.
Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on. Wednesday, July 6, 2005, the committee began its consideration of Bill C-38, respecting certain aspects of legal capacity for marriage for civil purposes.
APPEARING:
The Honourable Irwin Cotler, P.C., M.P., Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada.
WITNESS:

Lisa Hitch, Senior Counsel, Family, Children and Youth Section.
Mr. Cotler made an opening statement and, together with Ms. Hitch, answered questions.
At 9:45 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
