The Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology met at 3:40 p.m. this day, in room 705, Victoria Building, the Chair, the Honourable Michael Kirby, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Callbeck, Cook, Cordy, Fairbairn, P.C., Keon, Kirby, LeBreton, Morin and Pépin (9).

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Andrew Kitching, Research Analyst, Law and Government Division.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Wednesday, October 20, 2004, the committee continued its examination of Bill S-9, An Act to amend the Copyright Act. (For complete text of order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 2).

WITNESSES:

Ron Poling, Executive Director, Picture Services.

Canadian Newspaper Association:

David Gollob, Vice-President, Public Affairs.

Canadian Internet Policy and Public Interest Clinic (CIPPIC):

Phillippa Lawson, Executive Director;

Alex Cameron, Associate.

Mr. Poling, Mr. Gollob and Mr. Cameron each made a statement, and together all the witnesses answered questions.

It was agreed that the following budget application for legislation be approved for submission to the Committee on Internal Economy, Budgets and Administration:

Total:    $ 4,000

At 4:30 p.m., it was agreed that the committee adjourn to the call of the Chair.
