The Standing Senate Committee on Aboriginal Peoples met at 9:02 a.m. this day, in the DaVinci Ballroom of the Radisson Hotel Saskatoon in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, the Chair, the Honourable Gerry St. Germain, P.C., presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Dyck, Hubley, Lovelace Nicholas, Peterson, Sibbeston and St. Germain, P.C. (6).

Other senator present: The Honourable Senator Merchant (1).

In attendance: From the Parliamentary Information and Research Service, Library of Parliament, Tonina Simeone.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, May 9, 2006, the committee continued its study on the involvement of aboriginal communities and businesses in economic development activities in Canada. (See Issue No. 2, Wednesday, May 31, 2006, for the full text of the Order of Reference.)

The Chair made opening remarks.

Mr. Lonechild made a statement and, with Mr. Kayseas, answered questions.

Mr. Sherry made a statement and, with Ms. Isbister, answered questions.

At 10:28 a.m., the committee suspended.

At 10:46 a.m., the committee resumed.

Chief Bear made a statement and, with Mr. Balkwill, answered questions.

Chief Ben made a statement and answered questions.

At 12:07 a.m., it was agreed that the committee adjourn to the call of the Chair.

The Chair informed the committee of the presence in the audience of Ms. Marianne Ironquill Meadmore and of her desire to make a very short presentation.

It was agreed to invite Ms. Ironquill Meadmore to appear before the committee.

Ms. Ironquill Meadmore made a statement.

Mr. Gladue and Mr. Lendsay made a statement and answered questions.

At 3:40 p.m., it was agreed that the committee adjourn to the call of the Chair.
