The Standing Senate Committee on Aboriginal Peoples met at 9:30 a.m., this day, in room 160-S Centre Block, the Chair, the Honourable Gerry St. Germain, P.C., presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Dyck, Gill, Hubley, Milne, Sibbeston, St. Germain, P.C. and Watt (7).

In attendance: From the Parliamentary Information and Research Service, Library of Parliament, Tonina Simeone.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, March 29, the committee continued its study on the recent work completed in relation to drinking water in First Nations' communities. (See Issue No. 15, Wednesday, May 2, 2007, for the full text of the Order of Reference.)

WITNESSES:

Expert Panel on Safe Drinking Water for First Nations:

Harry Swain, Chair of the Expert Panel;

Steve Hrudey, Expert Panel Member;

Juli Abouchar, Legal Advisor.

The Chair made opening remarks.

Harry Swain made a statement and, together with Steve Hrudey and Juli Abouchar, answered questions.

At 10:55 a.m., the committee suspended.

At 10:57 a.m., pursuant to rule 92(2)(e), the committee resumed its sitting in camera to consider a draft agenda.

It was agreed that senators' staff and the communications officer remain in the room.

At 11:04 a.m., it was agreed that the committee adjourn to the call of the Chair.

Earl Commanda, Director of Housing;

Candice Metallic, Legal Counsel.

The Chair made opening remarks.

Richard Jock made a statement and, together with Earl Cammanda and Candice Metallic, answered questions.

It was agreed that the following budget application for the Committee's special study on drinking water in First Nations' communities be adopted for submission to the Internal Economy, Budgets and Administration Committee.

Total $2,000

At 7:30 p.m., the committee suspended.

At 7:32 p.m., pursuant to rule 92(2)(f), the committee resumed its sitting in camera to consider a draft report.

It was agreed that senators' staff and the communications officer remain in the room.

At 7:50 p.m., it was agreed that the committee adjourn to the call of the Chair.
