The Special Senate Committee on Aging met this day at 12:33 p.m. in room 9, Victoria Building, the Deputy Chairman, the Honourable Wilbert J. Keon, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Chaput, Cordy, Keon and Murray, P.C. (4).

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament, Michael Toye, Research Analyst.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, November 7, 2006, the committee continued its examination of the implications of an aging society in Canada. (For the full text of the Order of Reference, see Issue No. 1, Monday, November 27, 2006.)

WITNESSES:

International Federation on Ageing:

Jane Barratt, Secretary General.

Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (by videoconference):

Monika Queisser, Expert on Demographic Ageing, Employment, Labour and Social Affairs Directorate.

Healthy Ageing Project (by videoconference):

Karin Berensson, Project Manager;

Barbro Westerholm, MP (Sweden) and participant of the Healthy Ageing Project.

Active Living Coalition for Older Adults:

Dianne Austin, National Executive Director.

Creative Retirement Manitoba:

Marjorie Wood, Executive Manager.

International Council on Active Aging:

Colin Milner, Chief Executive Officer.

The Deputy Chairman made an opening statement.

Ms. Berensson, Ms. Westerholm, and Dr. Barratt made presentations and answered questions.

At 1:55 p.m., the committee suspended.

At 2:01 p.m., the committee resumed.

Ms. Austin, Ms. Wood and Mr. Milner made presentations and answered questions.

At 3:07 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
