The Standing Senate Committee on Banking, Trade and Commerce met at 10:45 a.m., this day, in room 9, Victoria Building, the Chair, the Honourable Jerahmiel S. Grafstein, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Angus, Biron, Eyton, Goldstein, Grafstein, Harb, Hervieux-Payette, P.C., Massicotte, Moore and Tkachuk (10).

In attendance: Philippe Bergevin, Research Officer, Library of Parliament.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on October 31, 2006, the committee began its study of the Bill S-5, to implement conventions and protocols concluded between Canada and Finland, Mexico and Korea for the avoidance of double taxation and the prevention of fiscal evasion with respect to taxes on income.

Parry Athenaios, Tax Policy Officer, Tax Policy Branch.

At 10:45 a.m., Ms. Ablonczy made a statement and together, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

At 12:20 p.m., it was agreed that the committee proceed to clause-by-clause consideration of Bill S-5.

It was agreed that the title stand postponed.

It was agreed that clause 1 stand postponed.

It was agreed that clause 2 in Part 1 carry.

It was agreed that clause 3 in Part 2 carry.

It was agreed that clauses 4 to 6 in Part 3 carry.

It was agreed that schedule 1 carry.

It was agreed that schedule 2 carry.

It was agreed that schedule 3 carry.

It was agreed that the title carry.

It was agreed that clause 1 carry.

It was agreed that the bill be adopted without amendments, and that the Chair report the bill without amendment to the Senate.

At 12:20 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Angus, Fitzpatrick, Goldstein, Grafstein, Harb, Meighen, Moore and Tkachuk (8).

In attendance: June Dewetering and Sheena Starky, Research Officers, Library of Parliament.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the Ordre of Reference adopted by the Senate on May 2, 2006, the committee continued its study on issues dealing with interprovincial barriers to trade. (For complete text of the order of reference, see Proceedings of the Committee, Issue No. 5)

At 12:20 p.m., Mr. Hodgson made a statement and answered questions.

At 1:15 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
