The Standing Senate Committee on National Security and Defence met this day at 1:30 p.m. in the Pinnacle III Room, Vancouver Marriott Pinnacle Hotel, the Chair, the Honourable Colin Kenny, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Atkins, Day, Kenny, Meighen, Moore and St. Germain, P.C. (6).

In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch, Library of Parliament: Melissa Radford and Jason Yung, Analysts; Major-General (Ret'd) Keith McDonald, Senior Military Advisor; Barry Denofsky, National Security Advisor; Inspector Richard Haye, RCMP Liaison Officer; and Captain (N) John Gardam, DND Liaison Officer.

Also present: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, April 27, 2006, the committee continued its examination on the need for a national security policy for Canada. (See Issue No. 1, Tuesday, April 25, 2006, of the committee's proceedings for the full text of the Order of Reference.)

At 1:45 p.m., the committee resumed in public in the Kensington Room.
