The Standing Senate Committee on Energy, the Environment and Natural Resources met this day in room 9, Victoria Building, at 5:58 p.m., the Chair, the Honourable Tommy Banks, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Angus, Banks, Cochrane, Fox, P.C., Kenny, Peterson, Sibbeston and Tardif (8).

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Sam Banks, Frédéric Beauregard-Tellier, Lynne Myers and Kristen Douglas.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, April 27, 2006, the committee continued its review of the Canadian Environmental Protection Act (1999, c. 33) pursuant to Section 343(1) of the said act. (For complete text of Order of Reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 2.)

WITNESSES:

Health Canada:

Steve Clarkson, Director, Risk Impact Assessment Bureau.

Environment Canada:

James Riordan, Executive Director, National Office of Pollution Prevention.

The Chair made an opening statement.

Mr. Riordan and Mr. Clarkson made a joint presentation and answered questions.

The Chair made a closing statement.

At 7:02 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
