The Standing Senate Committee on Energy, the Environment and Natural Resources met this day at 8:37 a.m., in room 257, East Block, the Deputy Chair, the Honourable Ethel Cochrane, presiding.
Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Adams, Angus, Cochrane, Milne, Peterson, Sibbeston and Spivak (7).
In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Lynne Myers and Kristen Douglas.
Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.
Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, April 27, 2006, the committee continued its review of the Canadian Environmental Protection Act (1999, c. 33) pursuant to section 343(1) of the said Act. (For complete text of Order of Reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 2.)
WITNESSES:
Environment Canada:
John Arseneau, Director General, Science and Risk Assessment;
Derek M. Muir, Chief, Atmospheric Contaminant Impacts.
Health Canada:
Steve Clarkson, Associate Director General, Safe Environments Programme;
Myriam Hill, Section Head, New Chemical Substances 1, New Substances Assessment and Control Bureau Product Safety Programme, Health and Consumer Safety Branch.
The Deputy Chair made a opening statement.
Mr. Arseneau made a presentation and, with Mr. Muir,Mr. Clarkson and Ms. Hill, answered questions.
The Deputy Chair made a closing statement.
