The Standing Senate Committee on Energy, the Environment and Natural Resources met this day at 6:10 p.m., in room 2, Victoria Building, the Chair, the Honourable Tommy Banks, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Angus, Banks, Cochrane, Milne, Mitchell, Spivak and Tkachuk (7).

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Lynne Myers and Sam Banks.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, April 27, 2006, the committee continued its review of the Canadian Environmental Protection Act (1999, c. 33) pursuant to section 343(1) of the said act. (For complete text of Order of Reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 2.)

WITNESSES:

Pollution Watch:

Kapil Khatter, Director of Health and Environment;

Kathleen Cooper, Senior Researcher, CELA.

Canadian Environmental Network:

Sheila Cole, Environment and Health Educator, Member, Board of Directors, Environmental Health Association of Nova Scotia; Co-Chair, Health Caucus;

Sandra Madray, Research and Education, Chemical Sensitivities, and Manitoba Caucus Member.

As an individual:

Richard Purdy, Toxicologist.

The Chair made an opening statement.

Ms. Cole, Ms. Madray, Mr. Purdy, Mr. Khatter, and Ms. Cooper made a presentation and answered questions.

The Chair made a closing statement.

At 8:30 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
