The Standing Senate Committee on Energy, the Environment and Natural Resources met this day at 6:20 p.m., in room 9, Victoria Building, the Chair, the Honourable Tommy Banks, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Adams, Angus, Banks, Cochrane, Milne, Mitchell, Robichaud, P.C., Spivak and Tkachuk (9).

Other senator present: The Honourable Senator McCoy (1).

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Sam Banks and Frédéric Beauregard-Tellier, Analysts.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, March 29, 2007, the committee continued its study on Bill C-288, to ensure Canada meets its global climate change obligations under the Kyoto Protocol. (For complete text of Order of Reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 16.)

WITNESSES:

Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers:

Pierre R. Alvarez, President;

Rick Hyndman, Senior Policy Advisor, Climate Change and Air Issues.

Canadian Chemical Producers' Association:

Richard Paton, President and Chief Executive Officer.

University of Calgary:

Robert Page, TransAlta Professor of Environmental Management and Sustainability.

The Chair made an opening statement.

Mr. Alvarez, Mr. Paton and Mr. Page made a presentation and, with Mr. Hyndman, answered questions.

The Chair made a closing statement.

At 8:38 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
