The Standing Senate Committee on Fisheries and Oceans met this day, in camera, at 10:47 a.m., in room 160-S, Centre Block, the Chair, the Honourable Bill Rompkey, P.C., presiding.
Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Adams, Cochrane, Comeau, Johnson, Robichaud, P.C., Rompkey, P.C., and Watt (7).
In attendance: Claude Emery, Analyst, Parliamentary Information and Research Services, Library of Parliament and Cathy Piccinin, Deputy Principal Clerk, Committees Directorate, the Senate.
Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, May 16, 2006, the committee continued its examination of issues relating to the federal government's new and evolving policy framework for managing Canada's fisheries and oceans. (For complete text of Order of Reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 1, dated April 27, 2006.)
Pursuant to rule 92(2)(e), the committee proceeded to consider a draft future agenda.
It was agreed that senators' staff be authorized to remain during the in camera session.
The Chair rendered a decision on a procedural matter.
It was agreed that the Chair write a letter to the Minister of Fisheries and Oceans regarding the testimony of the witnesses on the matter of beluga whale harvesting in Nunavik.
It was agreed that the Chair be authorized to seek an exemption to the competitive sourcing policy from the Standing Committee on Internal Economy, Budgets and Administration in regard to the charter flights for a trip to Northern Quebec (Nunavik) in the committee's supplementary budget application for its study on issues relating to the federal government's new and evolving policy framework for managing Canada's fisheries and oceans.
At 12:41 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.

At 11:39 a.m. Senator Hubley assumed the Chair.

The Chair made a statement.
Mr. Kaludjak made a statement, and together with Messrs. Merritt and Williams, answered questions.
It was agreed that Senators' staff be authorized to remain during the in camera session.
At 8:53 p.m. the committee suspended.
At 8:55 p.m., pursuant to rule 92(2)(e), the committee resumed in camera to consider a draft future agenda.
After review of a draft letter presented by the Chair, it was unanimously agreed that the Chair send this letter to the Minister of Fisheries and Oceans regarding the hunting of beluga whales in Nunavik.
At 9:04 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
