The Standing Senate Committee on Human Rights has the honour to present its
EIGHTH REPORT
Your Committee, which was authorized by the Senate on Thursday, April 27, 2006, to invite the Minister of Indian and Northern Affairs Canada to appear with his officials before the Committee for the purpose of updating the members of the Committee on actions taken concerning the recommendations contained in the Committee's report entitled A Hard Bed to Lie in: Matrimonial Real Property on Reserve, tabled in the Senate November 4, 2003, respectfully requests for the purpose of this study that it be empowered to engage the services of such counsel, technical, clerical and other personnel as may be necessary.
Pursuant to Chapter 3:06, section 2(1)(c) of the Senate Administrative Rules, the budget submitted to the Standing Committee on Internal Economy, Budgets and Administration and the report thereon of that Committee are appended to this report.

Extract from the Journals of the Senate of Thursday, April 27, 2006:
The Honourable Senator Andreychuk moved, seconded by the Honourable Senator Keon
That the Standing Senate Committee on Human Rights be authorized to invite the Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development to appear with his officials before the Committee for the purpose of updating the members of the Committee on actions taken concerning the recommendations contained in the Committee's report entitled A Hard Bed to lie in: Matrimonial Real Property on Reserve, tabled in the Senate November 4, 2003;
That the papers and evidence received and taken on the subject during the First, Second and Third Sessions of the Thirty-seventh Parliament and the first session of the Thirty-eighth Parliament be referred to the Committee; and
That the Committee continue to monitor developments on the subject and submit a final report to the Senate no later than March 31, 2008.

The Standing Committee on Internal Economy, Budgets and Administration has examined the budget presented to it by the Standing Senate Committee on Human Rights for the proposed expenditures of the said Committee for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2008 for the purpose of its special study on an invitation to the Minister of Indian and Northern Affairs, as authorized by the Senate on Thursday, April 27, 2006.
