The Standing Senate Committee on Official Languages met this day at 9:00 a.m. in the Cristal Room of the Metropolitan Hotel, Vancouver, the Chair, the Honourable Maria Chaput, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Chaput, Comeau, Jaffer, Losier-Cool, Murray, P.C., Robichaud, P.C., and Tardif (7).

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Marie-Ève Hudon.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, April 27, 2006, the committee proceeded to study, for the purpose of reporting on it from time to time, the application of the Official Languages Act and of the regulations and directives made under it, within those institutions subject to the act. (For the full text of the Order of Reference, see Issue No. 2, Monday, May 15, 2006).

WITNESSES:

Marc Arnal, President;

Jean Watters, Board Member.

Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games:

Francine Bolduc, Program Director, Human Resources and Official Languages;

Renée Smith Valade, Vice-President, Communications.

Canadian Tourism Commission:

Chantal Péan, Senior Vice-President, Corporate Affairs and Corporate Secretary;

William Harding, Senior Communications Advisor.

The Chair made an opening statement.

At 9:04 a.m., Mr. Arnal made a statement and then, together with Mr. Watters, answered questions.

At 10:20 a.m., Ms. Bolduc made a statement and then, together with Ms. Smith Valade, answered questions.

At 11:10 a.m., Ms. Péan made a statement and then, with Mr. Harding, answered questions.

At 12:14 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.

At 2:25 p.m., Ms. Mudahemuka and Mr. Magassa each made a statement and then with Mr. Nawri, Mr. Leba and Ms. Gaza, answered questions.

At 3:20 p.m., invited by the Chair to join the other witnesses, Mr. Mulanga and Mr. Masinda each made a brief statement.

At 3:27 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
