The Subcommittee on Population Health of the Standing Senate Committee of Social Affairs, Science and Technology met at 4:15 p.m. this day, in room 705, Victoria Building, the Chair, the Honourable Wilbert J. Keon, presiding.
Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Callbeck, Cochrane, Cook, Fairbairn, P.C., and Keon (5).
Other senators present: The Honourable Senators Eggleton, P.C., Munson (2).
In attendance: From the Library of Parliament Research Branch: Howard Chodos, Research Analyst, Science and Technology Division.
Also present: The official reporters of the Senate.
Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Wednesday, February 21, 2007, the subcommittee continued its study on the impact of the multiple factors and conditions that contribute to the health of Canada's population — known collectively as the social determinants of health. (See Issue No. 1, Thursday, February 22, 2007, for the complete text of the Order of Reference.)

Dr. Sylvie Stachenko, Deputy Chief Public Officer, Health Promotion and Chronic Disease Prevention;
Jim Ball, Director, Development and Partnerships Division, Strategic Policy Directorate, Strategic Policy, Communications and Corporate Services Branch;
Maura Ricketts, Acting Director General, Office of Public Health Practice, Public Health Practice and Regional Operations Branch.
Statistics Canada:
Michael Wolfson, Assistant Chief Statistician, Analysis and Development.
Kunin-Lunenfield Applied Research Centre:
Dr. Sholom Glouberman, Associate Scientist.
Sylvie Stechenko made a statement. Together with Jim Ball and Maura Ricketts, she answered questions.
At 5:20 p.m., Michael Wolfson and Sholom Glouberman each made a statement. Together, the witnesses answered questions.
It was agreed that the following budget application be adopted for submission to the Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology:
