The Standing Senate Committee on Transport and Communications met in camera this day, at 9:30 a.m., in room 257, East Block, the Honourable Lise Bacon, Chair, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Adams, Bacon, Dawson, Eyton, Johnson, Mercer, Merchant, Munson and Zimmer (9).

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Allison Padova and Terrence Thomas, Analysts.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, May 11, 2006, the committee began its consideration on the current and potential future containerized freight traffic handled at, and major inbound and outbound markets served by, Canada (i) Pacific Gateway container ports; (ii) east coast container ports; (iii) central container ports; and current and appropriate future policies relating thereto.

It was agreed that senators' staff be permitted to attend the in camera meeting.

Pursuant to rule 92(2)(e), the committee considered a draft agenda.

At 10:35 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators, Bacon, Dawson, Eyton, Johnson, Mercer, Merchant, Munson, Phalen, Tkachuk and Zimmer (10).

Other senator present: The Honourable Senator Austin, P.C. (1).

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Allison Padova and Terrence Thomas, Analysts.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, May 11, 2006, the committee continued its consideration on the current and potential future containerized freight traffic handled at, and major inbound and outbound markets served by, Canada (i) Pacific Gateway container ports; (ii) east coast container ports; (iii) central container ports; and current and appropriate future policies relating thereto.

WITNESSES:

Transport Canada:

Kristine Burr, Assistant Deputy Minister, Policy;

Richard Saillant, Acting Executive Director, Rail Policy;

Roger Roy, Director General, Economic Analysis;

Emile Di Sanza, Director General, Marine Policy;

Laureen Kinney, Director General, Marine Security.

Ms. Burr made an opening statement and, together with the other witnesses, answered questions.

At 11:12 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
