The Standing Senate Committee on Transport and Communications met this day, at 9 a.m., in the Park Ballroom C, Four Seasons Hotel Vancouver, the Honourable Lise Bacon, Chair, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Adams, Bacon, Dawson, Eyton, Mercer, Tkachuk and Zimmer (7).

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament, Allison Padova, Analyst.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, May 11, 2006, the committee continued its consideration on the containerized freight traffic handled by Canada's ports. (For complete text of Order of Reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 2.)

WITNESSES:

Vancouver Port Authority:

Captain Gordon Houston, President and CEO.

Fraser River Port Authority:

Captain Allan Domaas, President and CEO.

West Coast Container Freight Handlers Association:

Kevin Ouellette, President;

David Peacock, Vice-President and General Manager, Westran Intermodal;

Rick Cowan, Vice-President, Euroasia Transload;

Fraser Surrey Docks:

Ross Hanson, Executive Vice-President.

Capt. Houston and Capt. Domaas each made opening statements and answered questions.

At 10:36 a.m., the committee suspended.

At 10:45 a.m., the committee resumed.

Mr. Ouellette made an opening statement and tabled a brief.

Mr. Hanson made an opening statement.

Together, the witnesses answered questions.

At 12:37 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
