The Subcommittee on Veterans Affairs of the StandingSenate Committee on National Security and Defence met this day, at 12:13 p.m., in room 9, Victoria Building, the Chair, the Honourable Michael Meighen, presiding.

Members of the subcommittee present: The Honourable Senators Atkins, Day and Meighen (3).

Other senators present: The Honourable Senator Banks, Dallaire and Downe (3).

In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch, Library of Parliament: James Cox, Analyst.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, May 11, 2006, the subcommittee continued its study on the services and benefits provided to veterans of war and peacekeeping missions and members of their families in recognition of their services to Canada. (For complete text of Order of Reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 1.)

WITNESSES:

Veterans Affairs Canada:

Robert Mercer, Assistant Deputy Minister, Vimy Event 2007;

Émile Gallant, Acting Director of National and International Memorials.

Canadian Battlefields Foundation:

Major-General Clive Addy, President.

Commonwealth War Graves Commission:

Bradley N. Hall, Secretary-General.

The Chair made an opening statement.

Major-General Addy and Mr. Hall made a presentation and, with Mr. Mercer answered questions.

At 1:00 p.m., the committee suspended.

At 1:02 p.m., the committee resumed.

The Chair made a closing statement.

At 1:26 p.m., the subcommittee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
