The Special Senate Committee on Aging met this day at 12:31 p.m., in room 9, Victoria Building, the chair, the Honourable Sharon Carstairs, P.C., presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Carstairs, P.C., Chaput, Cools, Cordy and Keon (5).

In attendance: Julie Cool and Michael Holden, Analysts, Parliamentary Information and Research Services, Library of Parliament.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, November 1, 2007, the committee continued consideration of the implications of an aging society in Canada. (For complete text of the order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 1).

WITNESSES:

Canadian Institute for Health Information:

Jean-Marie Berthelot, Vice-President, Programs;

Christopher Kuchciak, Program Lead, NHEX/OECD.

Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives:

Marc Lee, Senior Economist (by video conference).

As an individual:

Robert Evans, Professor of Economics, University of British Columbia (by videoconference).

As an individual:

Joe Ruggeri, Professor, Department of Economics, University of New Brunswick.

Public Health Agency of Canada:

Margaret Gillis, Director, Division of Aging and Seniors/Office of Voluntary Sector.

The chair made a statement.

Mr. Evans, Mr. Lee, Mr. Berthelot, Mr. Ruggeri each made a presentation and, with Mr. Kuchciak, answered questions.

At 1:49 p.m., the committee suspended.

At 1:57 p.m., the committee resumed.

The chair made a statement.

Ms. Gillis made a presentation and answered questions.

At 2:34 p.m., the committee suspended.

At 2:36 p.m., pursuant to rule 92(2), the committee proceeded in camera to discuss a draft agenda.

It was agreed that senators' staff remain in the room

At 2:37 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
