The Special Senate Committee on Aging met this day at 12:34 p.m., in room 9, Victoria Building, the deputy chair, the Honourable Wilbert J. Keon, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Chaput, Cools, Cordy, Keon, Mercer and Stratton (6).

In attendance: Julie Cool, Philippe Le Goff and Havi Echenberg, Analysts, Parliamentary Information and Research Services, Library of Parliament.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, November 1, 2007, the committee continued consideration of the implications of an aging society in Canada. (For complete text of the order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 1.)

WITNESSES:

Queen's University:

Kathleen Lahey, Law Professor.

Federal Superannuates National Association:

Francis Bowkett, Executive Director;

Bernard Dussault, Senior Research and Communications Officer.

McMaster University:

Michael Veall, Professor and Chair, Department of Economics.

Informetrica Ltd.:

Bob Baldwin, Senior Associate.

As an individual (by videoconference):

Kevin Milligan, Assistant Professor of Economics, University of British Columbia.

The deputy chair made a statement.

Mr. Milligan, Ms. Lahey, Mr. Bowkett, Mr. Veall and Mr. Baldwin each made a presentation and, with Mr. Dussault, answered questions.

It was agreed that staff be permitted to remain in the room for the in camera portion of the meeting.

At 2:25 p.m., the committee suspended.

At 2:31 p.m., the committee resumed and pursuant to rule 92(2)(e), proceeded in camera to discuss a draft agenda.

At 2:43 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
