The Special Senate Committee on Aging met this day at 9 a.m., in the Sullivan room, Holiday Inn Halifax Harbourview, the chair, the Honourable Sharon Carstairs, P.C., presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Carstairs, P.C., Cools, Cordy and Mercer (4).

In attendance: Julie Cool and Michael Toye, Analysts, Parliamentary Information and Research Services, Library of Parliament.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, November 1, 2007, the committee continued consideration of the implications of an aging society in Canada. (For complete text of the order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 1.)

WITNESSES:

Nova Scotia Centre on Aging:

Pamela Fancey, Associate Director/Research Associate, Mount Saint Vincent University.

Spencer House Seniors' Centre:

Deborah Dostal, Executive Director.

Community Links:

Sandra Murphy, Executive Director.

As individuals:

Dr. David Martell, Lunenburg Medical Centre;

Dr. Chris MacKnight, Associate Professor, Department of Medicine, Dalhousie University;

Dr. Ken Rockwood, Professor of Geriatric Medicine, Dalhousie University.

The chair made a statement.

Ms. Fancey, Ms. Dostal and Ms. Murphy each made a presentation and answered questions.

At 9:29 a.m., the committee suspended.

At 9:35 a.m., the committee resumed.

Dr. Martell, Dr. Rockwood and Dr. MacKnight each made a presentation and answered questions.

At 12:01 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
