The Standing Senate Committee on Agriculture and Forestry met at 8:03 a.m., this day, in room 9, Victoria Building, the chair, the Honourable Joyce Fairbairn, P.C., presiding.
Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Callbeck, Fairbairn, P.C., Gustafson, Mahovlich and Peterson (5).
In attendance: Marc Leblanc and Frédéric Forge, Analysts, Parliamentary Information and Research Services, Library of Parliament.
Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.
Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, November 20, 2007, the committee continued its consideration of the present state and future of agriculture and forestry in Canada. (For complete text of order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 1.)

Kendal Hembroff, Deputy Director, Bilateral Market Access Division.

Steve Lavergne, Director, Western Hemisphere Trade Policy Division;
Frédéric Seppey, Director, Regional and Market Access Negotiations Division.
Canadian Sugar Institute:
Sandra Marsden, President.
Alberta Sugar Beet Growers:
Bruce Webster, General Manager.
Rogers Sugar:
Daniel Lafrance, Senior-President and Chief Financial Officer.
The chair made an opening statement.
Mr. Lavergne made a statement and, together with Mr. Foubert, Mr. Seppey and Ms. Hembroff, answered questions.
At 8:49 a.m., the committee suspended.
At 8:58 a.m., the committee resumed.
Ms. Marsden, Mr. Lafrance and Mr. Webster each made a statement and, together, answered questions.
At 9:59 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
