The Standing Senate Committee on Banking, Trade and Commerce met at 4:10 p.m., this day, in room 9, Victoria Building, the chair, the Honourable W. David Angus, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Angus, Eyton, Goldstein, Harb, Massicotte, Moore, Ringuette, Segal and Tkachuk (9).

In attendance: June Dewetering and Philippe Bergevin, Analysts, Parliamentary Information and Research Services, Library of Parliament.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

The committee considered the following draft budget application:

Professional and Other Services $ 9,300
Transportation and Communications $ 60,600
All Other Expenditures $ 3,000
TOTAL $ 72,900

The Honourable Senator Moore moved:

That the special study budget application (present state of the domestic and international financial system) in the amount of $72,900 be approved for submission to the Standing Senate Committee on Internal Economy, Budget and Administration.

The question being put on the motion, it was adopted.

Pursuant to the orders of reference adopted by the Senate on November 20, 2007, the committee continued its study of issues dealing with interprovincial barriers to trade in Canada. (For complete text of the order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 3.)

WITNESSES:

Bank of Canada:

Paul Jenkins, Senior Deputy Governor;

John Murray, Deputy Governor.

At 4:20 p.m., Mr. Jenkins made a statement and, together with the other witness, answered questions.

At 5:37 p.m., the committee suspended.

At 5:44 p.m., the committee resumed.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, November 20, 2007, the committee continued its study of the present state of the domestic and international financial system. (For complete text of the order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 3.)

WITNESSES:

Canadian Federation of Agriculture:

Ron Bonnett, Second Vice-President;

Glen Snoek, Farm Policy Analyst.

Mr. Bonnett made a statement and, together with the other witness, answered questions.

At 6:25 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
