The Standing Senate Committee on Banking, Trade and Commerce met at 10:50 a.m., this day, in room 9, Victoria Building, the chair, the Honourable W. David Angus, presiding.
Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Angus, Biron, Eyton, Goldstein, Gustafson, Harb, Massicotte, Moore, Ringuette and Tkachuk (10).
In attendance: June Dewetering and Philippe Bergevin, Analysts, Parliamentary Information and Research Services, Library of Parliament.
Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.
Pursuant to the orders of reference adopted by the Senate on March 5, 2008, the committee began its study of Bill S- 205, An Act to amend the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act (student loans). As well, pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, November 20, 2007, the committee continued its study of the present state of the domestic and international financial system. The Honourable Senator Yoine Goldstein, sponsor of the Bill.
Human Resources and Social Development Canada (HRSDC):
Rosaline Frith, Director General, Canada Student Loans Program.
Resolve Corporation:
Ralph DeJong, Vice-President, Students Loan Operations.
It was agreed that the Honourable Senator Goldstein would not occupy the position of deputy chair during the study of Bill S-205.
Mr. Paul Thomas and Ms. Marion Laurence were at the table to assist the Honourable Senator Goldstein in his presentation.
The Honourable Senator Goldstein made a statement and answered questions.
At 12:40 p.m., the committee suspended.
At 12:45 p.m., the committee resumed.
Ms. Frith made a statement and, together with Mr. DeJong, answered questions.
At 1:22 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
