The Standing Senate Committee on Official Languages met this day at 5 p.m. in room 9 of the Victoria Building, the chair, the Honourable Maria Chaput, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Champagne, P.C., Chaput, Comeau, Losier-Cool, Murray, P.C., and Tardif (6).

In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch of the Library of Parliament, Élise Hurtubise-Loranger and Tanya Dupuis, analysts.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, November 20, 2007, the committee continued to study the application of the Official Languages Act and of the regulations and directives made under it, within those institutions subject to the act. (For the full text of the Order of Reference, see Issue No. 1 of the committee proceedings.)

WITNESS:

Office of the Commissioner of Official Languages:

Graham Fraser, Commissioner of Official Languages;

Catherine Scott, Director General, Policy and Research Branch;

Dominique Lemieux, Director General, Compliance Assurance Branch;

Johane Tremblay, General Counsel, Legal Affairs Branch.

Mr. Fraser made a statement and, with Ms. Scott, Ms. Lemieux and Ms. Tremblay, answered questions.

At 6:28 p.m., the committee suspended.

At 6:33 p.m., pursuant to rule 92(2)(e), the committee moved in camera to consider a proposed agenda and a draft report.

At 7 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
