The Subcommittee on Population Health of the Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology met this day at 11 a.m. to organize the activities of the subcommittee.

Barbara Reynolds, Clerk of the Committee: Honourable senators, as clerk of your subcommittee, it is my duty to preside over the election of the chair.
[Translation]
I am ready to receive a motion to that effect.
[English]
Are there any nominations? It is moved by the Honourable Senator Pépin that the Honourable Senator Keon do take the chair of this subcommittee. Is it your pleasure, honourable senators, to adopt the motion?
Hon. Senators: Agreed.
Ms. Reynolds: I declare the motion carried.

The Chair: Thank you very much again. We have a lot of work to do and a lot of fun to have. I think we will be very pleased when we are finished with all of this.
The next item is the election of the deputy chair. Are there any nominations?
Senator Callbeck: I nominate Senator Pépin.
The Chair: Are there any further nominations? All those in favour?

The next items states that the chair and deputy chair be empowered to make decisions on behalf of the subcommittee with respect to agenda. Can we have a motion for that?
Senator Fairbairn: I so move.
The Chair: We can name the person to this position. Senator Cook has served in the past. Perhaps someone move her name.
Senator Fairbairn: I will so move.
The Chair: Thank you very much, Senator Fairbairn.
Then we have the motion to print subcommittee proceedings, with which you are all familiar. Would someone move that? Senator Pépin.
The fifth item concerns the authorization to hold meetings and to print evidence when quorum is not present, which you are familiar with again.
Senator Fairbairn: I will move that.
The Chair: Senator Fairbairn.
The sixth item refers to research staff. Senator Pépin so moves.

The seventh item concerns the authority to commit funds and certify accounts, with which the committee is familiar. Senator Fairbairn so moves.

Travel is the topic of the eighth motion. Senator Pépin so moves.

The ninth motion is the designation of members travelling on subcommittee business. Senator Fairbairn so moves.

Item 10 concerns travelling and living expenses of witnesses. Senator Pépin so moves.

Item 11 concerns electronic media coverage of the public meetings. Senator Fairbairn so moves. Thank you very much.
You missed an exciting portion of the meeting, Senator Brown.
Senator Brown: I hope you did not put me on anything I am not already on.
The Chair: Now we have the motion, again with which you are familiar, about attendance of senators' staff at in camera meetings. If we have this motion now, we do not have to have it before each meeting. Senator Pépin so moves.

Ms. Reynolds: Would you like to go in camera to discuss future business?
The Chair: Yes, we should have a brief meeting to discuss future business. Senator Cook is not here, but Senator Pépin, Senator Cook and I met informally about this. I would like to lay out to those here what lies ahead.
Ms. Reynolds: I do not believe you need the stenographers for this portion, so you could dismiss them.
The Chair: They are awfully important, but I think they are more valuable elsewhere.
