The Standing Senate Committee on Agriculture and Forestry met this day at 5:05 p.m., in room 705, Victoria Building, the chair, the Honourable Percy Mockler, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Baker, P.C., Callbeck, Carstairs, P.C., Eaton, Fairbairn, P.C., Housakos, Meighen, Mockler and Rivard (9).

In attendance: Mathieu Frigon, Analyst, Parliamentary Information and Research Service, Library of Parliament.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, March 31, 2009, the committee continued its consideration of the current state and future of Canada's forest sector. (For complete text of order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 1)

WITNESSES:

As individuals:

Tom Beckley, University of New Brunswick, Faculty of Forestry and Environmental Management.

Don Floyd, Chair, Canadian Institute for Forest Policy and Communications, University of New Brunswick, Faculty of Forestry and Environmental Management;

Jeremy Williams, Forestry Consultant, Registered Professional Forester in Ontario;

MM. Beckley, Floyd and Williams each made opening statements and, together, answered questions.

At 6:57 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Campbell, Cordy, Eaton, Fairbairn, P.C., Mockler, Poulin and Rivard (7).

Rob Keen, President;

Carla Grant, Executive Director.

Canadian Council of Furniture Manufacturers:

Terry Clark, President.

Ms. Grant and Mr. Clark each made opening statements and, together with Mr. Keen, answered questions.

At 8:40 a.m., the committee suspended.

At 8:45 a.m., pursuant to rule 92(2)(e), the committee proceeded in camera to consider a draft agenda (future business).

It was agreed that senators' staff be permitted to stay.

At 9:50 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
