The Standing Senate Committee on Agriculture and Forestry met this day at 6:35 p.m., in room 2, Victoria Building, the chair, the Honourable Percy Mockler, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Cordy, Duffy, Fairbairn, P.C., Mercer, Mockler, Munson, and Rivard (7).

In attendance: Mathieu Frigon, Analyst, Parliamentary Information and Research Service, Library of Parliament.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, March 31, 2009, the committee continued its consideration of the current state and future of Canada's forest sector. (For complete text of order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 1.)

WITNESSES:

Department of Natural Resources of New Brunswick:

Tom Reid, Deputy Minister.

New Brunswick Federation of Woodlot Owners:

Andrew Clark, President.

New Brunswick Forest Products Association:

Mark Arsenault, President and CEO.

MM. Reid, Clark and Arsenault each made opening statements and, together, answered questions.

At 8:23 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.

The Standing Senate Committee on Agriculture and Forestry met this day at 8:08 a.m., in room 2, Victoria Building, the chair, the Honourable Percy Mockler, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Cordy, Duffy, Eaton, Fairbairn, P.C., Housakos, Mercer, Mockler, and Poulin (8).

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, March 31, 2009, the committee continued its consideration of the current state and future of Canada's forest sector. (For complete text of order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 1.)

WITNESSES:

Fédération des producteurs de bois du Québec:

Pierre-Maurice Gagnon, President;

Jean-Pierre Dansereau, Director General.

Quebec Forest Industry Council:

Yves Lachapelle, Forestry Director, Special Adviser, Strategic Issues.

Quebec Wood Export Bureau:

Carl-Éric Guertin, Communications Director.

MM. Gagnon, Dansereau, Lachapelle and Guertin each made opening statements and, together, answered questions.

At 10 a.m., the committee suspended.

At 10:04 a.m., the committee resumed and pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, May 26, 2009, the committee began its consideration of rural poverty in Canada.

Pursuant to rule 92(2)(e), the committee proceeded in camera to consider a draft report.

It was moved that the committee adopt the report entitled Beyond Freefall: Halting Rural Poverty which was previously adopted by the committee on June 10, 2008 in the Second Session of the 39th Parliament.

The question being put on the motion, it was adopted.

At 10:30 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
