The Standing Senate Committee on Banking, Trade and Commerce met this day at 4:05 p.m., in room 9, Victoria Building, the chair, the Honourable Michael A. Meighen, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Frum, Gerstein, Greene, Harb, Hervieux-Payette, P.C., Meighen, Oliver, Peterson and Zimmer (9).

In attendance: John Bulmer, Analyst, Parliamentary Information and Research Service, Library of Parliament.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, June 16, 2009, the committee continued its examination of Bill S-232, An Act to amend the Patent Act (drugs for international humanitarian purposes) and to make consequential amendment to another Act. (For complete text of the order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 10.)

WITNESSES:

Health Partners International of Canada:

Glen Shepherd, President and Chief Executive Officer.

University of Ottawa:

Professor Amir Attaran, Associate Professor in the Faculties of Law and Medicine.

Mr. Shepherd made a statement and answered questions.

At 5:01 p.m., the committee suspended.

At 5:06 p.m., the committee resumed.

Mr. Attaran made a statement and answered questions.

At 5:59 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
