The Subcommittee on Cities met this day at 4:04 p.m., in room 2, Victoria Building, the chair, the Honourable Art Eggleton, P.C., presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Cordy, Eggleton, P.C., Martin and Stratton (4).

Other senators present: The Honourable Senator Keon (1).

In attendance: Robin Wisener and Sandra Elgersma, Analysts, Parliamentary Information and Research Service, Library of Parliament.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, February 24, 2009, and delegated to the Subcommittee on Cities on Wednesday, February 25, 2009, the subcommittee continued its examination on issues pertaining to Canada's largest cities. (For complete text of the order of reference, see proceedings of the subcommittee, Issue No. 1.)

Daniel Hiebert, Professor of Geography (by video conference).

Institut national de la recherché scientifique, Centre Urbanisation Culture Société:

Damaris Rose, Professor, Urban and Social Geography.

Ontario Council of Agencies Serving Immigrants:

Debbie Douglas, Executive Director.

The chair made a statement.

Ms. Douglas, Mr. Hiebert, and Ms. Rose each made a presentation and answered questions.

At 5:41 a.m., the committee suspended.

At 5:44 a.m., pursuant to rule 92(2)(e), the committee resumed in camera to discuss future business.

It was agreed that the site visit to Montreal take place on June 8, 2009 and the site visit to Vancouver take place on June 15, 2009.

At 5:54 p.m., it was agreed that the subcommittee adjourn to the call of the chair.
