The Subcommittee on Cities met this day at 4:15 p.m., in room 2, Victoria Building, the chair, the Honourable Art Eggleton, P.C., presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Cordy, Dyck, Eggleton, P.C., Martin and Segal (5).

Other senators present: The Honourable Senator Keon (1).

In attendance: Havi Echenberg and Robin Wisener, Analysts, Parliamentary Information and Research Service, Library of Parliament.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, February 24, 2009, and delegated to the Subcommittee on Cities on Wednesday, February 25, 2009, the subcommittee continued its examination on issues pertaining to Canada's largest cities. (For complete text of the order of reference, see proceedings of the subcommittee, Issue No. 1.)

WITNESSES:

Alain Noël, Professor, Department of Political Science (by video conference).

Vibrant Communities Saint John Leadership Roundtable:

Tom Gribbons, Chair (by video conference).

Hamilton Roundtable for Poverty Reduction:

Liz Weaver, Director.

The Honourable Deb Matthews, M.P.P., Minister of Children and Youth Services (by video conference).

The chair made a statement.

Mr. Noël, Mr. Gribbon and Ms. Weaver each made a presentation and answered questions.

At 5:24 p.m., the committee suspended.

At 5:29 p.m., the committee resumed.

The Honourable Deb Matthews made a presentation and answered questions.

At 6:01 p.m., it was agreed that the subcommittee adjourn to the call of the chair.

Mr. Pomeroy, Mr. Brown, Mr. Shapcott, Ms. Tanasescu, Mr. Rainer, Ms. Eberle, Mr. Seymour, Mr. Snow, and Ms. Regehr each made a presentation and, with Mr. Hill, answered questions.

At 10:24 a.m., the subcommittee suspended.

At 10:36 a.m., the subcommittee resumed.

Mr. Shapcott, Mr. Rainer, Ms. Regehr, Mr. Snow, Mr. Seymour, Mr. Pomeroy, Mr. Brown, Ms. Tanasescu, Ms. Eberle, and Mr. Hill each participated in the roundtable discussion.

At 1:04 p.m., it was agreed that the subcommittee adjourn to the call of the chair.
