The Standing Senate Committee on Fisheries and Oceans met this day at 5:06 p.m., in room 2, Victoria Building, the deputy chair, the Honourable Ethel Cochrane, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Adams, Cochrane, Cook, Eggleton, P.C., MacDonald, Manning, Raine, Robichaud, P.C., and Watt (9).

In attendance: Claude Emery, Analyst, Parliamentary Information and Research Service, Library of Parliament.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, March 12, 2009, the committee continued to examine the issues relating to the federal government's current and evolving policy framework for managing Canada's fisheries and oceans. (For complete text of the order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 1.)

WITNESSES:

Léonard Poirier, President.

Prince Edward Island Fishermen's Association:

Ed Frenette, Executive Director.

Fish, Food & Allied Workers Union:

Earle McCurdy, President.

Maritime Fishermen's Union:

Christian Brun, Executive Secretary.

Gulf Nova Scotia Bonafide Fishermen's Association:

Katherine Wallace, Executive Director.

Messrs. Poirier, Frenette, McCurdy, Brun and Ms. Wallace made a statement and, together, answered questions.

At 6:46 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
