The Senate Committee on Fisheries and Oceans met in camera this day at 5:10 p.m., in room 705, Victoria Building, the chair, the Honourable Bill Rompkey, P.C., presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Cochrane, Cook, Hubley, MacDonald, Raine, Robichaud, P.C. and Rompkey, P.C. (7).

In attendance: Claude Emery, Analyst, Parliamentary Information and Research Service, Library of Parliament.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, March 12, 2009, the committee continued to examine the issues relating to the federal government's current and evolving policy framework for managing Canada's fisheries and oceans. (For complete text of the order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 1.)

In accordance with rule 92(2)(e), the committee considered its future agenda.

At 5:45 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.

The Standing Senate Committee on Fisheries and Oceans met this day at 9:01 a.m., in the Caucus Room of the Legislative Assembly, Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, the chair, the Honourable Bill Rompkey, P.C., presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Cochrane, Cook, Raine, Hubley and Rompkey P.C. (5).

In attendance: Claude Emery, Analyst, Parliamentary Information and Research Service, Library of Parliament.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, March 12, 2009, the committee continued to examine the issues relating to the federal government's current and evolving policy framework for managing Canada's fisheries and oceans. TOPIC: Matters related to the Canadian Coast Guard and fisheries in the Western Arctic.

Mike Hecimovich, Area Director, Western Arctic Area, Central and Arctic Region.

Indian and Northern Affairs Canada:

Trish Merrithew-Mercredi, Regional Director General, Northwest Territories Region;

Teresa Joudrie, Acting Director, Contaminants and Remediation Directorate.

National Defence Canada:

Brigadier-General Dave Millar, Commander of the Joint Task Force (North).

Royal Canadian Mounted Police:

Grant M.E. St. Germaine, Superintendent, Criminal Operations, ``G'' Division;

Jack Kruger, Search and Rescue Coordinator for the Northwest Territories.

Messrs. Grenier and Burden each made a statement and, together with Messrs. Spurrell, Hunt and Hecimovich, answered questions.

At 10:05 a.m., the committee suspended.

At 10:13 a.m., the committee resumed.

Ms. Merrithew-Mercredi made a statement and, together with Ms. Joudrie, answered questions.

At 10:56 a.m., the committee suspended.

At 11:09 a.m., the committee resumed.

Brigadier-General Millar made a statement and answered questions.

Mr. St. Germaine made a statement and, together with Mr. Kruger, answered questions.
