The Standing Senate Committee on Fisheries and Oceans met this day at 10:34 a.m., in room 160-S, Centre Block, the chair, the Honourable Bill Rompkey, P.C., presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Cook, Finley, Hubley, MacDonald, Manning, Meighen, Patterson, Robichaud, P.C., and Rompkey, P.C. (9).

In attendance: Claude Emery, Analyst, Parliamentary Information and Research Service, Library of Parliament.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, March 12, 2009, the committee continued to examine the issues relating to the federal government's current and evolving policy framework for managing Canada's fisheries and oceans. (For complete text of the order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 1.)

Topic: Proposed Amendments to the Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Organization (NAFO) Convention.

WITNESSES:

As an individual:

Bob Applebaum.

Mr. McDorman and Mr. Applebaum each made a statement and answered questions.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Cochrane, Dallaire, Hubley, MacDonald, Manning, Patterson, Raine, Robichaud, P.C., and Watt (9).

Topic: Matters related to the Canadian Coast Guard and fisheries in the Western Arctic.

Burton Ayles, Canada Member.

Mr. Gillman made a statement and, together with Messrs. Kotakak and Ayles, answered questions.
