The Standing Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade met this day at 4:08 p.m., in room 160- S, Centre Block, the acting Chair, the Honourable Dennis Dawson, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Andreychuk, Corbin, Dawson, Di Nino, Downe, Fortin-Duplessis, Tkachuk, Wallin and Zimmer (9).

In attendance: Natalie Mychajlyszyn, Analyst, Parliamentary Information and Research Service, Library of Parliament.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

The committee proceeded to the election of an acting chair.

The Honourable Senator Andreychuk moved that the Honourable Senator Dawson be acting chair.

The question being put on the motion, it was adopted.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, February 24, 2009, the committee continued its examination on the rise of China, India and Russia in the global economy and the implications for Canadian policy. (For complete text of order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 3.)

WITNESSES:

High Commission for Australia to Canada:

Justin Brown, High Commissioner.

Taipei Economic and Cultural Office:

David Tawei Lee, Taiwan's Representative in Canada.

H.E. Justin Brown and Dr. Lee made statements and answered questions.

The Honourable Senator Downe raised the matter of his request for information from Mr. Eric Siegel, President and Chief Executive Officer, Export Development Canada on EDC's policy in financing companies that do business in Burma.

At 5:34 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
