The Standing Senate Committee on Human Rights met this day at 2:07 p.m., in room 2 Victoria Building, the chair, the Honourable A. Raynell Andreychuk, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Andreychuk, Brazeau, Demers, Mitchell, Munson and Nancy Ruth (6).

In attendance: Julian Walker, Analyst, Parliamentary Information and Research Service, Library of Parliament.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Monday, June 22, 2009, the committee continued its examination of issues of sexual exploitation of children in Canada. (For complete text of the order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue no. 10.)

WITNESSES:

Office of the Federal Ombudsman for Victims of Crime:

Steve Sullivan, Federal Ombudsman for Victims of Crime;

Joanne Taché, Director.

As an individual:

Benjamin Perrin, Assistant Professor, Faculty of Law, University of British Columbia (by video conference).

Salvation Army:

Michael Maidment, Area Director, Public Relations and Development, Federal Government Liaison Officer.

Mr. Sullivan made a presentation and, with Ms. Taché, answered questions.

At 3:00 p.m., the committee suspended.

At 3:03 p.m., the committee resumed.

Mr. Perrin and Mr. Maidment each made a presentation and together answered questions.

At 4:10 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.

The Standing Senate Committee on Human Rights met this day at 2:00 p.m., in room 257. East Block, the chair, the Honourable A. Raynell Andreychuk, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Andreychuk, Brazeau, Jaffer, Mitchell, Munson, Nancy Ruth, Peterson and Poy (8).

Other senator present: The Honourable Senator Carstairs, P.C. (1).

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, September 29, 2009, the committee began its examination of Bill S-223, An Act to amend the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act and to enact certain other measures in order to provide assistance and protection to victims of human trafficking. (For complete text of the order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue no. 14.)

Mr. Linklater and Ms. Vaughan each made a presentation and, with Mr. Stevens and Ms. Mandy, answered questions.

At 3:30 p.m., the committee suspended.

At 3:40 p.m., the committee resumed.
