The Standing Senate Committee on Official Languages met this day at 4:32 p.m. in room 9 of the Victoria Building, the chair, the Honourable Maria Chaput, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Chaput, Jaffer, Losier-Cool, Mockler, Neufeld, Seidman and Tardif (7).

Also present: Marie-Ève Hudon, Analyst, Parliamentary Information and Research Service, Library of Parliament.

In attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Wednesday, February 25, 2009, the committee continued to study the application of the Official Languages Act and of the regulations and directives made under it, within those institutions subject to the act. (For the full text of the order of reference, see Issue No. 1 of the committee proceedings.)

Topic: Study on Part VII and other issues

WITNESSES:

Public Service Commission of Canada:

Maria Barrados, President;

Donald Lemaire, Senior Vice-President, Policy Branch;

Robert McSheffrey, Director, Consultation and Counselling Services.

Canada School of Public Service:

Ruth Dantzer, President and Chief Executive Officer;

Sylvain Dufour, Director General, Language Training Centre.

Ms. Barrados made a presentation, and along with Mr. Lemaire and Mr. McSheffrey, answered questions.

At 5:43 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 5:49 p.m., the committee reconvened.

Ms. Dantzer made a presentation, and along with Mr. Dufour, answered questions.

At 6:40 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.

The Honourable Michel Bastarache, Counsel at the law firm Heenan Blaikie and former judge at the Supreme Court of Canada.

Mr. Bastarache made a presentation and answered questions.

At 6:32 p.m., the committee reconvened in camera, pursuant to rule 92(2)(e), to consider a draft agenda.

At 6:53 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
