The Standing Senate Committee on Aboriginal Peoples met this day at 6:47 p.m., in room 160-S, Centre Block, the chair, the Honourable Gerry St. Germain, P.C., presiding.
Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Hubley, Marshall, Ogilvie, Patterson, Peterson, Raine, Sibbeston and St. Germain, P.C. (8).
In attendance: Marion Ménard and Jodi Bruhn, Analysts, Parliamentary Information and Research Service, Library of Parliament; and Ceri Au, Communications Officer, Communications Directorate.
Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.
Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, March 16, 2010, the committee continued its consideration of the federal government's constitutional, treaty, political and legal responsibilities to First Nations, Inuit and Metis peoples and other matters generally relating to the Aboriginal Peoples of Canada. Eric Guimond, Acting Director, Research and Analysis Directorate;
Kathleen Keenan, Director General, Education Branch.
Statistics Canada:
Jane Badets, Director, Social and Aboriginal Statistics Division;
Evelyne Bougie, Analyst, Social and Aboriginal Statistics Division.
Mr. Guimond and Ms. Badets each made a statement and, together with Ms. Keenan and Ms. Bougie, responded to questions.
At 8:31 p.m., it was agreed that the committee adjourn to the call of the chair.

Michael Mendelson, Senior Scholar.
The clerk informed the committee of the unavoidable absences of the chair and deputy chair and presided over the election of an acting chair.
The Honourable Senator Sibbeston moved:
That the Honourable Senator Patterson be the acting chair.
The question being put on the motion, it was adopted.
The acting chair took the chair.
Mr. Mendelson made a statement and responded to questions.
At 8:45 p.m., it was agreed that the committee adjourn to the call of the chair.
