The Standing Senate Committee on Aboriginal Peoples met this day at 9:30 a.m., in room 160-S, Centre Block, the chair, the Honourable Gerry St. Germain, P.C., presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Brazeau, Cordy, Demers, Dyck, Fairbairn, P.C., Patterson, Raine, Sibbeston, St. Germain, P.C. and Stewart Olsen (10).

In attendance: Jodi Bruhn, Analyst, Parliamentary Information and Research Service, Library of Parliament; and Ceri Au, Communications Officer, Communications Directorate.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, March 16, 2010, the committee continued its consideration of the federal government's constitutional, treaty, political and legal responsibilities to First Nations, Inuit and Metis peoples and other matters generally relating to the Aboriginal Peoples of Canada. Mr. Vollant and Ms. Bastien each made a statement and, together, responded to questions.

At 11:03 a.m., it was agreed that the committee adjourn to the call of the chair.

Roberta Jamieson, President and Chief Executive Officer;

Noella Steinhauer, Director of Education.

As an individual:

David Newhouse, Chair and Associate Professor, Indigenous Studies, Trent University.

Ms Jamieson and Mr. Newhouse each made a statement and, together with Ms Steinhauer, responded to questions.

At 11:20 a.m., the committee suspended.

At 11:22 a.m., the committee, pursuant to rule 92(2)(e), resumed in camera to consider a draft agenda.

It was agreed that senators' staff be permitted to remain in the room during the in camera portion of the meeting.

It was agreed that the following persons/organization be invited to testify before the committee: Richard C. Powless, Sol Sanderson, Scott Serson and the New Brunswick Department of Education, Office for First Nations Perspectives.

It was agreed that a guide for witnesses appearing on the committee's study of First Nations education on reserve, prepared by the Library of Parliament, be posted on the website of the Standing Senate Committee on Aboriginal Peoples.

At 11:33 a.m., it was agreed that the committee adjourn to the call of the chair.
