The Standing Senate Committee on Agriculture and Forestry met this day at 5:07 p.m., in room 2, Victoria Building, the chair, the Honourable Percy Mockler, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Duffy, Eaton, Fairbairn, P.C., Marshall, Mercer, Mockler, Ogilvie, Plett, Robichaud, P.C., and Wallace (10).

In attendance: David Surprenant and Mathieu Frigon, Analysts, Parliamentary Information and Research Service, Library of Parliament.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, March 11, 2010, the committee continued its consideration of the current state and future of Canada's forest sector. (For complete text of order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 1)

WITNESSES:

Council of Canadian Academies:

John Thompson, Chairman, TD Bank Financial Group;

Renata Osika, Program Director.

Sustainable Chemistry Alliance:

James Lee, Portfolio Manager.

Biothec Forestry:

Tony Roy, Project Manager;

Nathalie Charbonneau, Secretary-Treasurer.

Mr. Thompson made a statement and, together with Ms. Osika, answered questions.

At 6:15 p.m., the committee suspended.

At 6:17 p.m., the committee resumed.

Mr. Lee, Ms. Charbonneau and Mr. Roy each made a statement and, together, answered questions.

At 7:15 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.

It was agreed that the witnesses' briefs, available in only one official language, be distributed now and that the translations be sent to members once they are available.

Mr. Crotogino, Mr. Trusty and Mr. Innes each made a statement and, together, answered questions.

At 9:50 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
