The Standing Senate Committee on National Security and Defence met this day at 4:00 p.m., in room 2, Victoria Building, the chair, the Honourable Pamela Wallin, presiding.
Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Cordy, Dallaire, Lang, Manning, Meighen, Mercer, Pépin, Segal and Wallin (9).
In attendance: Holly Porteous, Analyst, Parliamentary Information and Research Service, Library of Parliament; and Tracie LeBlanc, Communications Officer, Communications Directorate.
Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.
Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Wednesday, March 17, 2010, the committee continued its study on the national security and defence policy of Canada. Brigadier-General (Retired) Serge Labbé, Deputy to NATO, Senior Civilian Representative (SCR), HQ ISAF, Kabul, Afghanistan (by video conference).
National Defence:
Colonel Gregory D. Burt, Director of Future Security Analysis.
North American Aerospace Defence Command:
General Victor E. Renuart, USAF, Commander, NORAD and United States Northern Command.
General (Retired) Serge Labbé made a statement and answered questions.
At 4:50 p.m., the committee suspended.
At 4:55 p.m., the committee resumed.
Colonel Gregory D. Burt made a statement and answered questions.
At 5:31 p.m., the committee suspended.
At 5:40 p.m., the committee, pursuant to rule 92(2)(e), proceeded in camera to discuss its draft agenda.
It was agreed that senators' staff be permitted to remain in the room for the in camera portions of today's meeting.
At 5:52 p.m., the committee suspended.
At 6:02 p.m., the committee resumed in public.
General Victor E. Renuart made a statement and answered questions.
At 6:56 p.m., the committee suspended.
At 7:00 p.m., the committee, pursuant to rule 92(2)(e), proceeded in camera to discuss its draft agenda.
At 7:05 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
