The Standing Senate Committee on National Security and Defence met this day at 4:05 p.m., in room 2, Victoria Building, the chair, the Honourable Pamela Wallin, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Dallaire, Day, Lang, Manning, Mitchell, Patterson, Pépin, Plett and Wallin (9).

Other senator present: The Honourable Senator Segal (1).

In attendance: Martin Auger and Holly Porteous, Analysts, Parliamentary Information and Research Service, Library of Parliament; and Molly Shinhat, Communications Officer, Communications Directorate.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Wednesday, March 17, 2010, the committee continued its study on the national security and defence policies of Canada. WITNESSES:

Canadian Hydrographic Service:

Savithri Narayanan, Dominion Hydrographer;

Dale Nicholson, Regional Director, Central and Arctic Region.

Reserves 2000:

Lieutenant-Colonel (Retired) John Selkirk, Executive Director.

Savithri Narayanan made a statement and, together with Dale Nicholson, answered questions.

At 4:58 p.m., the committee suspended.

At 5:06 p.m., the committee resumed.

Lieutenant-Colonel (Retired) John Selkirk made a statement and answered questions.

At 6:02 p.m., the committee suspended.

At 6:04 p.m., the committee, pursuant to rule 92(2)(e), proceeded in camera to discuss its draft agenda.

It was agreed that senators' staff be permitted to remain in the room for the in camera portions of today's meeting.

It was agreed that Senator Dallaire be added to the membership of the Subcommittee on Veterans Affairs.

At 6:24 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
