The Standing Senate Committee on Energy, the Environment and Natural Resources met this day, at 6:07 p.m., in room 257, East Block, the chair, the Honourable W. David Angus, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Angus, Banks, Brown, Dickson, Lang, Massicotte, McCoy, Mitchell, Peterson, and Seidman (10).

In attendance: Sam Banks and Marc LeBlanc, Analysts, Parliamentary Information and Research Service, Library of Parliament.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, March 11, 2010, the committee continued its examination of the current state and future of Canada's energy sector (including alternative energy). (For complete text of the order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 1.)

WITNESSES:

Canada West Foundation:

Roger Gibbins, President and CEO (by video conference).

Sustainable Development Technology Canada:

Vicky Sharpe, President and CEO;

Sailesh Thaker, Vice-President, Industry and Stakeholder Relations;

Rick Whittaker, Chief Technical Officer and Vice-President, Investments.

The chair made an opening statement.

Mr. Gibbins made a statement and answered questions.

At 7:03 p.m., the committee suspended.

At 7:06 p.m., the committee resumed.

The chair made a statement.

Ms. Sharpe made a statement and, together with Mr. Whittaker, answered questions.

At 8:31 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.

The Standing Senate Committee on Energy, the Environment and Natural Resources met in camera this day, at 8:36 a.m., in room 257, East Block, the chair, the Honourable W. David Angus, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Angus, Banks, Brown, Dickson, Frum, Lang, Massicotte, Nolin, Peterson, and Seidman (10).

In attendance: Marc LeBlanc, Analyst, Parliamentary Information and Research Service, Library of Parliament.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, March 11, 2010, the committee continued its examination of the current state and future of Canada's energy sector (including alternative energy). (For complete text of the order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 1.)

It was agreed that senators' staff be authorized to remain in the room.

The chair made an opening statement.

Pursuant to rule 92(2)(f), the committee considered a draft report.

After debate, it was agreed that:

The draft report, as amended, be adopted;

That the chair and deputy chair be authorized to make editorial revisions without altering the intent of the text; and

That the chair table the report at a future sitting of the Senate.

Pursuant to rule 92(2)(e), the committee considered its future agenda.

It was moved:

That the Subcommittee on Agenda and Procedure be empowered to approve the special study budget application (energy sector public hearings) and the special study budget application (energy fact finding) as discussed, and that they then be submitted to the Standing Committee on Internal Economy, Budgets and Administration.

The question being put on the motion, it was adopted.

At 10:22 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
